150 Years of Service:
The Story of Gillotts Funeral Directors
A Family Business Built on Generations of Trust
Gillotts is an independent family business with origins dating back to the Victorian era. Since the 1800s, we have been serving families across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, expanding our reach with each new generation. In 2017, we proudly celebrated our 150th anniversary.
Over the years, although our name has changed, our family business approach has remained at the core of all we do. This commitment is why we continue to be a trusted source of support for families in need.
What sets us apart as the leading local family funeral director is our strong reputation. Our families know they can trust us to care for them and their loved ones with the utmost compassion and consideration, enhanced by personal touches that truly make a difference.

Our Origins
An original business card, shows that in 1867, the Leivers family started the ‘Star Livery Stables’ in Victoria Street, Eastwood supplying vehicles to local undertakers.
But it is the story of Barry and Elaine Hutsby, current Partners, who are at the very heart of the story of Gillotts as it is today.
From Carriage Masters…
Barry and Elaine helped to evolve the business from a carriage masters supplying vehicles to local undertakers to offering a complete funeral service.
In the 1960s, Barry began helping Elaine’s uncle Roy service the family business’s fleet of vehicles.
Following her uncle’s sudden passing in 1973, Barry and Elaine stepped up to form a partnership (Eastwood and District Funeral Service), transforming the business from a traditional carriage master into the complete funeral service we are today.

… To Complete Funeral Services.
Under Barry and Elaine’s guidance, Gillotts has grown into a modern firm that continues to respect the timeless values of the profession.
Whilst they delegated the day-to-day operations to the next generation, in 20XX, Barry, who holds the Diploma in Funeral Directing, remains an integral part of the business’s forward planning.

The Next Generation
Since 20XX, Joanne Hutsby (Barry and Elaine’s oldest daughter), together with Anthony Topley (son-in-law to Jack Gillott) now manage the day-to-day operations of the business.
Together they work to ensure that the legacy of both their family businesses continues and local families continue to receive the personal care and attention that Gillotts is known for.
