Traditionally, before a burial, a service takes place in an indoor venue. This could be a Church, either at the same site as the burial if we are burying in a Churchyard or at a different Church, or a venue in the grounds of a cemetery such as a cemetery chapel.
Alternatively we can hold a service in the chapel of a local crematorium before moving on to the burial ground.
The deceased will be brought to the service venue by hearse, and taken inside with the utmost care and respect. The coffin will be placed at the front close to where the main family will be sitting. Your funeral director will lead the family in behind the coffin and indicate where they should sit.
The service itself can be personalised with music, readings, hymns and prayers.
If you chose to have a service in a secular building such as a cemetery or crematorium chapel you can opt for a non-religious service if you wish to, but if you have a service in a Church then the service would be led by a minister from that Church and would include religious content.
