Understanding the Different Types and Styles of Funerals
Navigating the choices surrounding a funeral can feel overwhelming.
Whether you’re considering cremation, burial, or a direct cremation, the decision is deeply personal.
We’re here to provide you with clear information and compassionate guidance, helping you understand each option so you can choose a farewell that’s right for you and the deceased.
Funeral types and styles
Cremation funerals
Cremation is the most commonly chosen type of funeral by families in the UK. Most include a service before the cremation takes places, and the ashes can either be scattered at the crematorium or returned to the family.
Direct Cremations
A direct cremation is a cremation that takes place with no service or mourners present at the crematorium. The ashes can then be scattered on your behalf in the Garden of Remembrance at the crematorium, or they can be returned back to you.
Low Cost Funerals
A low cost funeral is a dignified send off that includes a basic coffin, but typically removes some of the more traditional aspects of a funeral, such as limousines, floral arrangements, a large service and wake to keep costs down.
Burial funerals
A burial offers a permanent place to visit the deceased and many families choose this option for personal, traditional, or religious reasons. Most burials include a service beforehand at a church or crematorium, or simple burials can take place entirely at the graveside.
Natural or Woodland Burial
A natural or woodland burial focuses on ecological sustainability and conservation and returning the body to the earth in a sustainable way. These types of funerals take place in a natural setting like a forest or meadow, and involve using biodegradable materials for the coffin and avoiding embalming fluids.
Simple Funerals
A simple funeral is a less elaborate alternative to a traditional funeral, and typically includes the essential services such a basic coffin. Whilst simple can mean different things to different people, it’s likely to exclude aspects such as limousines, elaborate floral arrangements and a large service.
Themed Funerals
Themed funerals are where the funeral reflects the individual it honours. This could be as simple as choosing a colour theme, or choosing a theme that represents a person’s interests and passions, such as a sports team, a TV show or a movie, or a hobby such as gardening, fishing or a love of motorbikes for example.
Celebration Of Life Funerals
A celebration of life funeral is a tribute that truly reflects the individual, creating a positive and uplifting atmosphere for family and friends.
A celebration of life funeral can take many forms, but unlike a more traditional funeral, which is often more sombre and formal, a celebration of life funeral is a chance to tell stories and share the laughter, passions, and spirit that defined the person who has died.
Repatriation
Repatriation is the process of returning a deceased person to their place or country of origin. If they have died away from home at a location in the UK or abroad, we can help you bring them back here to the local area. Or if they have died here in Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire, we can assist with repatriating them to a destination anywhere in the UK or abroad.
