What Happens During a Chapel of Rest Visit?

Visiting a loved one in the Chapel of Rest can be a daunting experience, particularly if you haven’t done this before. Below we guide you through the what happens when visiting the Chapel of Rest.

We’re here to help you through this, so if you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch on 0800 470 1130.

Arrival And Welcome

When you arrive, we will explain what to expect when you go into the Chapel of Rest.

We will try to answer any concerns or worries that you may have before you are escorted into the Chapel.

How the Deceased Will Look

The deceased will be dressed according to your wishes.

Details such as make up and hair will be carefully arranged to ensure they appear comforting and familiar.

Open or Closed Coffin

There are times when someone wishes to spend time with their loved one with the coffin closed.

There are also times when we recommend this the coffin is closed due to circumstances beyond our control.

Placing Items Into the Coffin

It is fine to place personal items into the coffin with the deceased.

However, certain items must be removed before cremation. Metal objects, electronic devices, plastic or artificial fibres such as stuffed toys, and anything flammable such as alcohol or lighter fluid or items containing batteries are not permitted in cremations due to safety and environmental concerns.

For burials in traditional cemeteries there are very few restrictions on what can be placed in the coffin. For natural burials we need to avoid artificial fibres and plastics.

If you are unsure, please just ask.

Take All the Time You Need

When you visit the Chapel of Rest you can take all the time you need.

We are on hand the whole time to guide you and answer any questions you might have.

Visiting by Appointment

If you choose to visit a person who has died in our Chapel of Rest, this is done by appointment during office hours.

If you or another member of the family are unable to make it during office hours, we can arrange for a visit to take place outside of office hours depending on which of our funeral packages you have chosen for the funeral.

Bringing The Person Who Has Died Home

If you wish, and if practicalities permit, we can bring your loved one home on the day before or the morning of the funeral.

The coffin could be left open to allow people to see the deceased, depending on the circumstances and your wishes, or the coffin can be closed.

If you would like us to do this, please let us know.
